Book Marketing

Writing and publishing a book are only part of the process of releasing a book for others to enjoy. Still need to get it into the hands of the readers. That is where marketing comes in.

Amazon Book Ranking

Why are the books on those pages?

First, learn how Amazon ranks books on its pages. Consider the sales matrix used by Amazon—whose books go on which pages. Why are some books on the first pages?

  • Paid Adds put books on the first pages. Search words are assigned click-value. When a person types in a word, Amazon sends him to your book (because it was set up by you in the Add software), then once he clicks on the book, you are charged for the direction. Two books may have sponsored ads running for the same subject. The one with the highest click value will be shown first.
  • Sales numbers. High sales will get you on the front pages. Think of Amazon like a grocery store. They put the seasonal items on the end cap because they know people shop more for items that are on the end cap aisle. Amazon makes money when they sell your book. More sales = more money. Simple.
  • New books may show up on the first pages for a while.
  • Books with a lot of reviews demonstrate consumer trust. Verified Reviews rank higher than unverified reviews.
  • A unified show on Amazon helps. Does your book have robust search words? Is the cover snappy? Does your book point to a hot topic? Is Author Central filled out? Does your photo show up alongside the book? Have you applied for a unique URL? People will find you more easily if your name is part of the URL.
  • A book demonstrates versatility if several formats are offered. These include paperback, hardback, Kindle e-book, and an audiobook. I admit that not all books need these formats, but expanding them may help with exposure on Amazon.
